San Diego Zoo engagement session with Andrew & Jackie

I photographed Andrew and Jackie at San Diego Zoo the day before we had our storms in January, when it rained for 2 weeks straight. I love how the clouds added drama to the images.

It was also the day before the poor Charger’s lost (sorry for the reminder, Kimi!) in the playoffs so the zoo was extra crowded with tourists. But we made do! Though we couldn’t get up close with the animals to create table themes, as Jackie wanted. Each exhibit was just full of people so we wandered around to find some light, instead.

Ah, I love these two. They’re always so smiley and happy! I love the lines at the aviary enclosure.

After the session, Andrew said he had to go home and plan for his Sunday School class early the next morning. Jackie had convinced him to teach with her. Isn’t that sweet?

They’ll be getting married in the Bay Area next month, and I can’t wait until their wedding.

Shannon & Bryan’s Engagement Session | Julian

Ah, what can I say about this two? Maybe I should have Kealoha write this post because she’s *completely* in love with Bryan and Shannon. She makes them drawings regularly, and they indulge her stories. They let me play in their softball team (David’s idea, not mine!) even though I can’t even untie my own shoes! ha! We dig their sense of humor, and they love good food so we enjoy hanging out with them. Our family is blessed to have them in our lives.

Bryan and Shannon actually drove to Julian the week before these photos were taken to scout out some places for the shoot. The colors hadn’t quite changed, yet, but by the time we took these photos, the leaves’ colors have turned into these glorious shades!

Of course, I love this out-of-focus one. I’m weird like that.

With a beautiful couple and great light, how could a photographer go wrong!

Bryan & Shannon: A Proposal

I noticed that my last post before the long blogging hiatus was a sneak peek of Bryan and Shannon’s engagement session. But I had the honor of photographing the actual proposal so before I post their engagement photos, let me show you images from the evening Bryan proposed.

This was a first for me so I was a bit nervous. We planned and planned some more. We planned when I’d arrive, where I’d hide, when Bryan would text me to let me know they’re leaving the restaurant they’d have dinner prior (it involved a “trip to the men’s room”), pinpointing the spot on the beach where Bryan will go on bended knee…It was all too exciting. Months later, I still get little butterflies when I look at these photos!

The day before, my family went to Moonlight beach and found a good hiding place –some cubicles under the steps at the Encinitas beach. I made sure I had a good vantage point without being conspicuous. We even had Kealoha get on bended knee in front of Keilah to simulate what will happen the next day. We noted the time when the sun set so we could arm Bryan with the info…

On “The Day,” after Bryan texted me that they were leaving the restaurant, I anxiously sat in that 3×3′ cubicle, sand falling on me and my camera from all the people going up and down the steps. Twice, I mistook a different couple and started to photograph them as they walked down the beach. Then, out of the blue, I see Shannon & Bryan passing in front of me! I started clicking away. I learned later that Shannon had said, “There’s a photographer taking pictures of the sunset. We’re so going to be in her shots!” haha!
