musings on photography and the body

Last night, I was reflecting on photography.  I’m such a practical person,  it’s sometimes hard for me to see how photography fits. I have a hard time seeing it as something useful, something I can use to serve others and to glorify God. I know I have preconceptions about what service is. I see it as feeding the hungry, helping the elderly, doing things for others. In light of those things, photography doesn’t seem to hold much meaning.

Then, I was reminded that God created us in His image. God is THE creator. He’s creative. And he created things that are beyond practical. He created beauty. He created colors. He created textures. He created music. These things are certainly nice to have, yet they’re not essential for our survival. I think He created them for His and our sheer enjoyment!

So if God made things that don’t seem so “practical,” isn’t it okay then that he seems to have made a not-so-practical part of me? In talking about the church as a body, 1 Corinthians 12:18 says, ” But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.” That means God has placed each of us – even me – where He pleases. Who am I to question it?
