My sister and a couple of friends have asked me to teach them more about photography through tips on the blog. For the most part, I feel inadequate at doing that. So many better-qualified experts are out there who can eloquently, yet simply, explain the mechanics of taking a picture. But I can share what I know. I read something this morning that I wanted to share with you:
“I was talking to a new photographer recently and sensed her frustration with not knowing it all. Listen, there is no secret masonic handshake you need to know to take great images. You need the basics, the fundamentals of the visual language. But more than that – you need heart. By all means, work on technique – learn the ins-and-outs about histograms and depth of field and whatever little techniquey thing turns your crank – but shoot from the heart. Shoot about things you CARE about.” -pixelatedimage.typepad. com
You can read the entire entry here.
I guess that would be my first photography “tip”. Shoot what you love. Be it your children, flowers, cauliflower, whatever. Have fun shooting and don’t apologize for it! And the more you shoot, the more you will want to learn the technical stuff because you want those images of things you care about to be better. So go out, have fun, and take some pictures! Then share them with me! I’m nosy and would love to see what makes you click the shutter!
