reading

While reading The Seven Minute Difference by Allyson Lewis, I was astounded by the statistics she had on reading. Over half of Americans don’t read another book after high school. It was just incredible to me (and to my friend, Juniper, a fellow bibliophile) that people stop reading after 12th grade! I’m surrounded by bookworms so it’s hard for me to fathom not reading. My dad used to tell me that my grandfather could not go to sleep without reading first. He must have passed that love of the written word to me because I’m the same way. It’s ridiculous, really, but my stacks of to-be-read books are almost like a security blanket; they give me comfort. I start feeling a bit twitchy when my piles start to get low because I like having options on what to read next. Last time I went back to Hawaii, I made my sister get a library card so I can check out books. I’m so thankful for libraries. I’d be broke otherwise. Amazon would take all my money!

Below is a list of some of my favorite authors.

  • Dale Carnegie
  • Steven Covey
  • Maya Angelou
  • Jane Austen
  • Sue Grafton
  • Kate White
  • Jodi Picoult
  • Maeve Binchy
  • Max Lucado
  • Phillip Yancey
  • Kay Arthur
  • Beth Moore
  • Marian Keyes
  •  Will you share your favorites (books or authors) with me? I’m always on the lookout for new reads…

It seems I’ve passed on the reading gene to Keilah and Kealoha, as well. In fact, I think Keilah reads even more books than I do. It seems like she always has one on her. read.jpgThis picture was taken while we were waiting for some family at a hotel lobby. I turned around to see that Keilah has somehow produced a book, perched herself by a window and started reading Encyclopedia Brown!

I guess everyone is entitled to his/her own interests. I’m sure surfers would think I’m missing out because I’ve never learned to ride a wave! Right, David?

I was in shock when I read that statistic! That’s unbelievable to me. I am in love with reading. One of my first memories is going to the library with my dad. Jane Austen and Jodi Piccoult are my all time faves
Some of my other favorite authors are:
    LM Montgomery
    JK Rowling
    Don Luis Miguel
    Anne McCaffrey
Jasper Fforde (Thursday Next Series – these are so clever and witty!)

I’ll read just about anything, it doesn’t matter to me. Just as long as I have something to keep me occupied!
