I met with Keilah’s teacher yesterday, and she told me that because of Keilah’s test scores and school performance, she might talk to the principal about having K skip 3rd grade next year. Her awesome teacher recognizes her abilities and gives her lessons that are up to her level so she’s not just doing busy work. Now we’re trying to research if acceleration would be good for her. Here are some of our thoughts:
We wonder if she’ll be ready emotionally and socially.
She’s so tiny, we don’t want her getting picked on.
Yet, we don’t want to hold her back academically.
If she doesn’t skip a grade, and her future teachers just give her “regular” work, she might end up bored.
Last year, she was in a mixed 1st/2nd grade class so she could possibly go to 4th grade with some of the same children next year. This might help her transition.
Do we want her going off to college at 16? That seems really young, and it would only be 9 years away!
We (David and I) will definitely be researching the pros/cons of acceleration before making a decision. However, we were wondering what you, our trusty readers, would do? Do you have any experience/wisdom that you want to share with us? We’d appreciate it!
